The Croatian National Theater in Donji Grad, Zagreb is a monumental building and theater, opera and ballet house located on the Republic of Croatia Square (Trg Republike Hrvatske). The theater evolved from the initial city theater in the contemporary old town hall. The “Source of Life” fountain can be found in the wall at the entrance of the theater. Many great Croatian and international artists have worked and performed in the theater. In terms of construction, the building can be compared to the Zurich opera and Hoftheater Wiesbaden. Besides this theater in Zagreb, there are also national theaters in Split, Rijeka, Osijek, Varaždin, and Zadar.
