Maksimir Park is the oldest public park in Zagreb, located in the eponymous district and near Maksimir Stadium. It is part of Zagreb’s cultural heritage and the habitat of many different plants and animals. The park is named after its initiator, Bishop Maksimilijan Vrhovac. Before it was a park, it was a dense forest full of oak trees. The remains of this forest now surround the park. The park contains several meadows, five lakes and several streams, and as such is a great place to check out while you are in Zagreb. The Zagreb Zoo is part of the southern part of the park.
